What goes into a custom railing?
A custom railing is designed around your space and built to your measurements, not pulled off a shelf. Will builds each one in our Cokato shop, starting from your photos, a sketch and rough measurements, then talks through the design until it fits the stairs, deck or porch it is going on. The spacing, the corners and the way the railing meets your house are all decided for your project. We build custom railings for homes and lake cabins, from Cokato and Annandale to the west metro, including Buffalo, Maple Grove, Plymouth and Chanhassen. Will grew up in his family's ornamental iron shop and has worked in the trade full time for about six years. He now runs his own shop in Cokato, and he does the quote, the measuring, the building and the installation himself. Porch and entry railings are part of the work too. Every railing is a one-off, whether it is a straight run of stair railing or a deck with several turns. Text or call with a few photos and we will take it from there. Learn more about Will and the shop.
Which railings can we build for you?
Each railing type has its own page with the details. If yours is not on the list, send a photo and ask.

How does a custom railing project work?
Four steps, and Will is the one person you deal with from the first call to the install. You start with a text or a call.
-
Text or call with photos
Send photos of the space, a rough sketch and your measurements. Rough is fine to start.
-
Will measures on site and sends a quote
Will comes out to measure, talks through the design with you, then sends a quote. Quotes can be signed online.
-
Built in the Cokato shop
Your railing is made to your measurements in our Cokato shop.
-
Will installs it
Will installs every railing he builds, so the person who measured is the person who puts it up.
What affects the price of a custom railing?
Every railing is built one at a time, so the price depends on the piece. We quote after we have seen your photos and measurements, so the number matches your project and not a guess. Four things move it the most.
- LengthA longer run takes more to build.
- Design and patternA simple, clean look is a different job than a detailed or decorative one.
- Corners and transitionsEach turn, landing or change in height adds work.
- How it attachesThe way the railing mounts to your stairs, deck or porch shapes the build.

Custom railing questions, answered
How much does a custom railing cost?
The cost of a custom railing in Cokato depends on its length, the design and pattern, the number of corners and transitions, and how it attaches. Every railing is built one at a time. We quote after we have seen your photos and measurements, so the price fits your project.
How does the custom railing process work?
A custom railing project starts with a text or call, with photos and rough measurements. Will then measures on site, talks through the design and sends a quote, which you can sign online. The railing is built in our Cokato shop, and Will installs it. You deal with one person from the first call to the install.
Which towns do you build railings for?
We build custom railings for homes and lake cabins from Cokato and Annandale to the west metro, including Buffalo, Saint Michael, Maple Grove, Plymouth, Minnetonka, Eden Prairie, Chanhassen and Chaska. We also take projects around Minneapolis, Andover, Saint Cloud and Willmar. Not sure about your town? Ask.
How long will I wait for a custom railing?
The wait for a custom railing from our Cokato shop depends on the design and on what is on the shop schedule. A simple run and a stair with several turns are different jobs. The timeline comes with your quote, once Will has seen the space and your measurements, and he will tell you where things stand.
Do you install custom railings?
Yes. Will installs every custom railing he builds, from Cokato to Annandale and the west metro. He measures on site, builds the railing in our Cokato shop and then puts it in himself, so one person handles the whole job from your first call to the finished install.
Ready to talk about your railing?
